AMU Papers

I built AMU Papers solo: an exam-paper platform used by 1,000+ AMU students. OCR and regex parsing extract questions from uploaded papers, Mixtral-8x7B drafts answers, and admins moderate uploads and pay contributors via UPI. It ran on PHP and MySQL and is no longer online.

01 · Overview

Past papers, contributed by students and answered by an LLM

AMU Papers was an exam-paper platform for students of Aligarh Muslim University. I built it on my own in 2024, and 1,000+ AMU students used it.

It did more than store PDFs. Students contributed past papers, and the system pulled the questions out of each upload. A language model drafted answers, and admins checked uploads before they went live. Contributors were paid via UPI.

What students got was a published archive of past papers: the questions from each paper, with a drafted answer alongside each one.

What I built, alone

  • The contributor side: uploading past papers as PDFs
  • Question extraction from each upload, with OCR and regex patterns
  • Answer drafting with Mixtral-8x7B
  • The admin side: reviewing uploads and paying contributors via UPI
  • The student pages, in object-oriented PHP on MySQL with AJAX

02 · Under the hood

Plain PHP, with the AI kept to one job

The platform was object-oriented PHP on MySQL, with JavaScript and AJAX in the browser for the student pages and the admin review screens.

The model had one job: drafting answers. OCR and regular expressions did the extraction, so every question came from the uploaded paper itself, not from the model. Admins moderated each upload and paid contributors via UPI.
